Artist Statement:
I began metal sculpting in 1996 after leaving my previous career as a psychologist. I wanted to fulfill my passion of creating sculpture from the images in my mind. I look forward to the challenge of trying to interpret images into well-built metal objects. While I enjoy making art for galleries, museums and individuals, my goal is to be involved in creating Public Art, which can be experienced by more people. I like the aspect of researching the history of the proposed site and design an artwork that incorporates this information as well as input from the present community.
Beginning a new project allows me to explore the idea in my mind and envision how I will build it. Part of that process involves reflecting where my psyche is at that time. When I work on a new piece, I am always looking for ways to bring an animated and life-like feeling to the sculpture. This opportunity to experiment with material, and explore often produces a better result than I had originally anticipated. I base my projects on the selection of materials and how the metal captures the connections I want the sculpture to convey to the viewer. This includes different finishes such as: patina, grinding, textures, rusting, or painting. Another important component in material selection to consider is whether the piece will be placed inside or outside. Deciding on a theme is part of the joy where my creative process interacts with the location and individuals included in the venture.
My current work has me working with pendulum movement and continuous curves in my art as well as creating dynamic pieces that come really alive. Recently, I have added hand-forming metal, using traditional techniques as a way to bring more dimension to my work. I want the movement in my sculptures to evoke a story and further engage the viewer. |
